Can Generative AI Benefit the Furniture Industry?

Many furniture companies have grappled with how (if at all) to implement the new wave of generative Artificial Intel (AI) in their business.

What role does generative AI currently play in the furniture industry?

Many companies – if not all – are exploring generative AI, and we’re seeing that large and global enterprises in particular are taking a measured and cautious approach. Instead of diving into full-scale production projects right from the start, they begin with small pilot initiatives involving generative AI.

But generative AI is a natural partner for consumer insights, particularly for businesses in the furniture industry that are on understanding customer needs and expectations, and bringing that understanding to all their employees.

As furniture brands navigate the potential implementation of generative AI tools, what should they prioritise (or avoid) to ensure long-term success?

Firstly, it’s important that furniture business executives consider that generative AI is still in its early stages of development, and take a thoughtful approach as a result. Furniture businesses need to identify real-life pain points that generative AI tools can effectively address. Implementing generative AI simply for the sake of using the technology, without a clear purpose, may lead to inefficiency resource allocation and limited effectiveness.

When it does come time for implementation, it’s crucial that furniture businesses make sure they only work with trusted vendors for AI solutions, and that the data they use in an AI-enabled system is handled in a secure and compliant manner. For furniture companies who are reliant on market and consumer research to make business decisions, it’s pivotal that any tool they implement only uses vetted data to generate AI-enabled answers – unlike open AI apps that pull from the public domain, or that might not process data in a compliant manner.

Additionally, during integration, furniture organisations must ensure that their generative AI tool is complemented by a human-run service layer. Implementing generative AI effectively requires a human component to ensure long-term value and ROI.

What unique challenges furniture brands face? How can  AI help solve them?

Furniture brands, and all consumer-facing retailers, are faced with the constant challenge of keeping up with consumer preferences. Based on the economy, location and cultural trends, consumer needs, expectations, and desires can be hard to see and follow, and insights and data analysis are crucial ways to keep up – but doing so is essential for business success and customer loyalty.

Consumer insights allow brands to actively understand how consumers are reacting to products, and what their preferences are. Generative AI takes this capability one step further by making it easier for users of the new tools to discover new information through the simplified, conversational interface made possible by generative AI technologies.

In what ways can the implementation of generative AI tools help furniture brands maximise profits and develop a better understanding of consumer expectations/ preferences?

Generative AI can supercharge the technologies that are already delivering a positive impact on the furniture industry in a variety of ways. From a consumer preference perspective, democratized access within the organization is crucial, and that can be catalyzed by a generative AI tool.

Generative AI reduces the time spent on manually researching and analysing important information and responding to consumer preferences, opening up operational bandwidth to be spent on implementation and action, which is important for furniture brands looking to stay on top of trends and close to their consumers.

Prioritizing consumer-centricity and customer data helps give businesses the upper hand. Research by McKinsey shows that organizations that leverage customer behavioral insights outperform peers by +85% in sales growth and more than +25% in gross margin.

With its heavy reliance on qualitative data, the furniture industry is in a unique position to accelerate  impactful decision making organization-wide, with the increased insight that new generative AI solutions can provide – maximizing returns and business success.

Will generative AI eliminate some job functions for human employees in the furniture industry? For data collection and consumer insights specifically, how might customized generative AI tools complement or eliminate human work?

AI solutions should complement human intelligence, not replace it. Generative AI tools should be viewed as a huge asset for consumer-facing businesses, and can be leveraged to complement the work of employees to give them more time to delve into other projects.

For knowledge management specifically, combining generative AI capabilities and custom data can help to dramatically reduce the time spent on internal manual tasks like desk research and analysis of proprietary information. The time saved and the new insights gained from an ability to access data and insights more easily and quickly can result in a better return on data and insights, a more customer-centric organization with better decision-making, more product innovation, and ultimately more opportunities, and increased revenue and profitability.

How do you think generative AI customization will propel business operations for the furniture industry as the world gains a better understanding of how to leverage the technology?

Generative AI is currently in its early stages, but development in this area is happening at lightning speed. The implementation of generative AI solutions can provide furniture companies with incredible power and speed to sort large volumes of data, delivering a significant productivity boost, and promoting exploration and inspiration through a seamless interface.

It is expected that Generative AI will eventually become a fully integrated aspect of the technology stack for large enterprises – especially for consumer-facing businesses like those in the furniture industry – enabling brands to be the most efficient and capable versions of themselves.

The industry is in process of understanding  the technology and what can be accomplished with it. Time will tell what the long-term impact and applications for this new technology will be across different areas.

One opportunity for incorporating generative AI into the furniture industry centres around the enhanced efficiency, productivity and creativity among employees in furniture companies enabled by them discovering new information through the simplified, conversational interface made possible by generative AI technologies.

AI can help brands access relevant data and insights more easily and quickly, resulting in a more customer-centric organization with more informed decision-making, better product innovation, and thus more opportunity to increase revenue and profitability. No matter where customers are shopping, a generative AI-powered knowledge management tool will ensure that companies can have a clearer understanding of what its customers want and what their preferences are.

Traveling for Gaming

Traveling for Gaming

Games have always been an important part of society both for learning rules and strategy and experiencing competition in a healthy and fun way.

Vacations are good for the heart, body, mind and soul.  Everyone needs some time off, but not everyone is excited about that Caribbean beach and umbrella drink vacation or the Alaskan cruise to see the glaciers and the all-you-can-eat buffet.  Some people long for adventure, yet they are not prepared for rock climbing in Colorado or hiking the Highland Trail.

There are those who have fond memories of afternoons at the local arcade, weeknight backgammon games with their siblings and weekend competitive chess matches at the city park.  They still love spending a couple of hours in the evening playing darts at the local gin joint or take every rainy weekend as a cue to indulge in all-day video gaming. These game-loving types have started to constitute a new type of traveler: people, mostly in their 20s and 30s who travel for gaming purposes, in order to experience video game competitions or take a look at how exotic games are played. Who are these gamer traveler and what drives him to embark on game-filled journeys?

Pokémon Go

The phenomenon began over a weekend that is normally dedicated to the upcoming Independence Day in the good old US of A. Instead of parades and fireworks’,  the release of Pokémon GO  was scheduled for July 6, 2016. Pokémon GO was one of the first interactive reality games (meaning interaction with the REAL world) and it received rave reviews for giving gamers incentive to be more active in the real world. Shortly after its release, it had been downloaded by over 75 million people, and is now available in 33 countries. It implements a technology called Augmented Reality, meaning that it superimposes digital images on real images using your smartphone or tablet’s camera – but of course, moving forward, headgear like Google Glasses could also come forward to implement this gaming technology.

Many of the available countries are throughout Europe, making a Pokémon GO travel itinerary a must do.  Now you can travel through Tuscany in search of Jigglypuff or hang in Amsterdam collecting the elusive Gyarados. In fact, there are some Pokémon that are exclusive to specific locales: Tauros in North America, Mr. Mime in Europe, Farfetch’d in Asia and Kangashkan in Australasia. Considering that trading is not (yet) implemented in the game, completionists are already posting in internet forums, stating their intentions to take transatlantic trips and beyond to catch the Pokémon they’re missing.

What’s more, this phenomenon has already become apparent in some places: the Associated Press reported that because of South Korea’s limitation on GPS services, most Korean players are not able to catch Pokémon. There are, however, some places in the country that do have access to these services. Since the game’s launch in South Korea, people have been traveling to these areas, namely Sokcho, in order to play the game. They have actually gotten to calling it “Pallet Town,” after the name of the village in the inaugural games of the franchise, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

77% of players are over 18 and 54.2% make over $50,000 income, making travel for Pokémon a common travel decision. With new countries in the works, gamers can take a weekend chasing Vapoeons in a nearby city or travel across the world for a Caterpie.  Unfortunately, airlines and hotels are not accepting Pokécoins as a form of payment as of yet.

Tour Classic Game Histories and Championships

Pokémon just not your thing? You are wondering what ever happened to good old classics like Dominoes, Chess and Darts?  Believe it or not, they still the happening thing in many parts of the world.  It’s fascinating to discover and travel to where your favorite games across the globe, from poker to exotic Morabaraba were invented and are still a large part of the local culture today.

Whether it’s learning about the origins of Chess in India or Darts in England, the history of your favorite classics makes a great centerpiece to your travel plans. Additionally, even if you’re not the gamer-traveler type, local board and card games are a great opportunity to learn a bit more about the culture of the place you’re visiting, let off steam and bond with your fellow travelers and even locals.

Even more exciting is traveling the world to attend championships of classic games like backgammon or even pinball. The World Championship of Pinball brought Pittsburgh alive in April and the Backgammon Championship recently took place in Monte Carlo. The World Series of Dominoes takes place in the exciting city of Las Vegas in September. The World Chess Championship comes to New York City in November, followed by the World Darts Championship in London during the second half of December.

The Asian Experience of Arcades

Sadly, arcades have gone the way of the Dodo in the United States and Europe, but they are still very much alive and popular in Japan.  One can still enter the world of flashing lights, deafening techno music and machines blaring commands and retro music as players get lost in their own gaming world. This experience is completely unknown to many in the west.

If movies like Tron and Pinball Wizard are some of your favs, then a Japanese arcade adventure is the perfect vacation for you

Las Vegas

Las Vegas might be considered one of the adult gaming capitals of the world.  Casino destinations rank as top destinations for travelers with Las Vegas ranking the top 3 travel destinations in the US. With plenty of discount incentives to get travelers to start gaming, this does not need much explanation

If you have even the most remote interest in video games, either PC or console, you have probably heard of the phenomenon of eSports. What used to be limited to your living room and computer desk has become an arena sport, attracting millions in of tournament attendees and online viewers.  People travel from all over the world to watch brand sponsored League of Legends, Call of Duty and Warcraft teams battle it out on the big screens. Which brings us to the third gamer-traveler category: the professional (and his/her audience)! If you want to rub elbows with the newly famous, join over 150,000 fans this fall at the Counter Strike: Global Offensive Championship in London and San Francisco where winning prizes top $1.4 million. Or join over 300,000 fans in Paris for the ESports World Convention at Paris Games Week. If you can’t make it to a championship, there are a multitude of video game conferences to attend all over the world.

Travel companies are actually putting together tours for today’s gamer. Follow Lara Croft to Thailand or visit Havana, Call of Duty’s backdrop.  Tours include flights, accommodations and a “game plan.”

Regardless of your gaming passion, there is a great vacation awaiting you.  The assortment of event locations make it easy to bring your non-gamer mate and still have a brilliant “playcation.”

Anthem Film Festival Starts July 11

Anthem Film Festival at Freedom Fest

at Paris Las Vegas, July 11-14

Anthem Libertarian Film Festival started in 2010 on the 26th floor of the Skyview Room at Bally’s Hotel in Las Vegas with a handful of films and just a few dozen viewers in the audience. Since then it has grown to host over a thousand viewers in single screenings (John Aglialoro’s “Atlas Shrugged 3” and Dinesh D’Souza’s “America: Imagine the World without Her”) and so many libertarian entries that we have to turn away great films every year because we don’t have room for all of them.

The Anthem Film festival not only attracts great controversail films and also great speakers to  post-screening panels. John Fund, Doug Casey, Yeonmi Park, Jeffrey Tucker, Naomi Brockwell, Bill Whittaker, Jim Rogers, Jennifer Grossman, Adam Kokesh, Li Schoolland, Barbara Kolm, Veronique De Rugy, Adam Brandon and Congressman Tom Massie are just a few of the FreedomFest speakers who will be participating in a dozen hard-hitting panels at Anthem this year.

You can attend the Anthem Film Festival and listen to dozens of FreedomFest speakers by purchasing a Film Lovers Pass for just $149.  What a bargain! Most film festivals charge 3 to 5 times that much.  This includes all panels and meetups.
Here’s what your FilmLovers Pass will give you:

Two dozen documentaries and short narratives that offer a voice of reason in a world that’s gone mad. There are films about global economics, public policy, and personal relationships. About justice, envy, revenge, and vigilantism. About communism, immigration, and seeking refuge in a new land. About hope for the future through technology and free minds.  Films that are hard-hitting, edgy, poignant, and fun. Don’t miss our selection of short films that begin the festival at 9 am Thursday morning. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll fume--and one might scare you to death.

A dozen panels covering communism, immigration, the Antifa movement, grassroots politics, economics, totalitarian science, free speech, and the #MeToo movement, among others. Read the film and panel descriptions here.
The Anthem theater lobby lounge, where you can meet with like-minded people to discuss films, politics, and whatever suits your fancy.

Access to the FreedomFest “trade show for liberty” in the exhibit hall, including the opening night cocktail reception.
Discounted rate for the Saturday night Awards Banquet and Reason Media Awards (just $125 for Anthem or FreedomFest pass holders; $250 for non-pass holders.)
Top quality films. SABER ROCK, about a heroic Afghan translator, just won an EMMY— and that’s just one of our award-winning films that you can see it at Anthem.

Anthem  provides entertainment that makes a difference--a difference in the way we think, the way we feel, and the way we act. Come for the films, and stay for the discussions. The movies will enlighten your mind, and just might change your life.

The FilmLovers Pass occurs coincident with the FreedomFest (which requires a separate pass). The Freedom Fest features presentatiosn by George Will, Robert Kiyosaki, Judge Napolitano, Deneen Borelli and Charlie Kirk and Fast Money Summit.

New Building Material Improves Energy, Lowers Cost and Resists fire and mold. Is it possible?

by Rob Longwell

Storm-Proof, Bullet-Proof Concrete

Architect Andrew Dennis is working to change how buildings have been construced from wood for thousands of years. He's touting a new way to build, with material that's strong enough to stop a speeding bullet or withstand a tropical hurricane, yet safe enough to eat.“Everyone knows stucco cracks, concrete cracks, and we walk on it every day, we accept it, because that's normal,” Dennis says.

GigaCrete was conceived in the early 21st century by British-born architect and industrial designer Andrew C. Dennis whose impetus was to create cementitious green building materials that are strong and lightweight. [4][5] Mr. Dennis is founder and chairman of this innovative green and strong building material and method.

A Different Kind Of Concrete

Worried about the massive energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions of traditional cement, Dennis decided to quit his day job and take on the task of inventing a new material. He spent three years locked away designing the products he now calls “GigaCrete.”

A plug-and-play system, Dennis's pre-fab walls are interlocking pieces not unlike legos: the system includes a corner piece, a t-shape, and a straight panel, which all lock in place using steel beams.
Steel beams lock inside pre-fabricated wall forms, that will later be covered in GigaCrete stucco and plaster. (Photo: GigaCrete, Inc.)

“Normally you frame the house, it looks like a skeleton of sticks, and then you put insulation in between,” Dennis says. “I've reversed it.”

With GigaCrete, the 'sticks' (ie. steel) are on the inside, and insulation 'glues' the building together on the outside.

The binder Dennis created using seawater is non-toxic, fire-proof and edible, too (though probably not delicious). Layered on a few coats thick, the plaster becomes a harder “Ballisticrete:” a bulletproof wall.

Weathering Storms... And Bullets

What started as a vacation home model has morphed into a quick-build system that's gaining traction across building industries. Chains like DaVita DVA +0.55% Dialysis and Carl's Jr. have built prototypes, and national forest ranger stations have taken interest as the company's coatings are being applied on energy efficient schools across the country.

Dennis says he's spoken with governments too: in Saudi Arabia (where builders are looking for super-insulated desert homes) and here at home, The White House is looking at military applications.
“Only in the last few months I'm seeing people get serious about it,” Dennis says.

While Dennis never did get around to building that vacation home of his, some in storm-prone areas have used his model. Ralph DeVane built a Giga-house in the Bahamas, that he reports holds up "like a rock," even as powerful Hurricane Joaquin recently ripped through, pummeling the island with 150 mile per hour winds. DeVane says his waterproof vacation house initially cost him roughly 15 percent more than a traditional cement-build. But now, he saves around $600 in cooling costs each month.\

On February 14, 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) challenged the homebuilding trade to construct 220,000 "high-performance" homes by 2012 that score 70 or lower on the EnergySmart Home Scale.  To qualify as high-performance, a home must use 30%-or-less energy than a typical new home built per the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code.  In early 2009, Next Gen 09 LLC, in partnership with the DOE Builders Challenge program, built a high-performance 5,200-square-foot (480 m2) demonstration home outside Las Vegas, Nevada  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that GigaCrete PlasterMax was used as the interior-wall finish of that high-performance Las Vegas home.

GigaPanels are the components utilized in GigaHouse but may also be used in other forms of construction such as:
  • Grow rooms, insulated Green houses for hydroponics, aquaponics
  • Cold storage facilities
  • Insulated Water Tanks
  • Roofs
  • Floors
  • Lightweight balconies
  • Garages
  • RV/Motorhome garages
  • Building wraps covering over existing walls with highly efficient insulation
  • Military training facilities
  • Relocatable structures
  • Basement finishing
  • Commercial infill partitions
  • Tenant improvements

Green building material

GigaCrete PlasterMax, a LEED qualified interior wall coating, was listed as a green building material by Architectural Record and selected by BUILDERNews magazine  as a Best Products 2007 Winner.

The Greenguard Environmental Institute (GEI) certified GigaCrete PlasterMax as a Low-Emitting Listed Product.  "The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute is an industry-independent, non-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification ProgramSM. As an ANSI Authorized Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, environments, and buildings."
In 2007, Popular Mechanics magazine awarded a Best in Green Design to panels made with GigaCrete hydraulic cement and waste materials.
