Indian Specialty Foods: A Culinary Treasure Trove

India, known for its rich cultural heritage, boasts an equally diverse and vibrant culinary tradition. Each region of the country contributes unique flavors and dishes, reflecting local ingredients, climates, and cultural influences. From the tangy street foods of Mumbai to the royal feasts of Rajasthan, Indian specialty foods represent a journey through centuries of history and culinary innovation. Here, we explore some of India’s most iconic specialties that continue to captivate food enthusiasts worldwide.

North India: A Feast of Rich Flavors

Northern India, characterized by its cooler climate and fertile plains, is a hub for hearty and flavorful dishes. The region is renowned for its use of dairy products like ghee, butter, and cream, which lend richness to its cuisine.

Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhani) stands as one of the most celebrated dishes from Punjab. This creamy, tomato-based curry, enriched with butter and a medley of spices, is often paired with naan or basmati rice. Another iconic dish is Rogan Josh, a slow-cooked lamb curry from Kashmir, infused with aromatic spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and Kashmiri red chilies.

Street food enthusiasts will find solace in Chaat, a tangy and spicy medley of ingredients like fried dough, boiled potatoes, chickpeas, and chutneys. Variants like Pani Puri, Aloo Tikki, and Dahi Bhalla dominate the bustling streets of Delhi and Lucknow.

South India: A Symphony of Spices

South Indian cuisine, influenced by coastal produce and a love for spices, offers a stark contrast to its northern counterpart. Rice and coconut form the backbone of most dishes, while tamarind and curry leaves add a signature tangy and earthy flavor.

Masala Dosa, a thin, crispy rice pancake filled with a spiced potato mixture, is a beloved breakfast item across the region. Accompanied by sambar (a lentil-based vegetable stew) and coconut chutney, it represents the perfect balance of flavors.

Kerala’s Fish Curry is another specialty, prepared with fresh fish, coconut milk, and tamarind. The coastal state’s love for seafood is evident in dishes like Meen Moilee and Prawn Theeyal.

Snacks like Banana Chips and Medu Vada (crispy lentil doughnuts) reflect the region’s penchant for light yet flavorful bites.

Eastern India: A Blend of Sweet and Savory

Eastern India is known for its simplicity and reliance on fresh, local ingredients. The cuisine’s highlight is its balance between sweet and savory flavors.

Macher Jhol, a light fish curry, is a staple in Bengali households. Made with mustard oil, green chilies, and turmeric, it’s often paired with steamed rice. Bengal is also home to India’s dessert crown jewel, Rasgulla, spongy balls of chhena (cottage cheese) soaked in sugar syrup.

Neighboring Odisha offers Dalma, a wholesome dish made with lentils and vegetables, seasoned with a tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves. Snacks like Pitha, a type of rice cake, are popular during festivals.

Western India: A Palette of Contrasts

Western India’s cuisine spans the royal kitchens of Rajasthan to the cosmopolitan tastes of Mumbai. The region’s food reflects its diverse geography, from arid deserts to lush coastal areas.

Rajasthan’s Dal Baati Churma is a signature dish consisting of baked wheat balls, spiced lentils, and a sweetened crumbly mix. Meanwhile, Goan Fish Curry, a coconut-based preparation with a hint of kokum, showcases the influence of Portuguese colonization.

Mumbai’s street food culture thrives with specialties like Vada Pav, a spiced potato fritter sandwiched in a bun, and Pav Bhaji, a buttery vegetable curry served with soft bread rolls. Gujarat’s Dhokla, a steamed, fermented rice-and-chickpea cake, offers a light and healthy snack option.

Northeast India: A Hidden Gem

The cuisine of Northeast India is relatively unexplored but offers some of the most unique flavors in the country. Influenced by neighboring countries like Myanmar and China, the food here is fresh, fermented, and simple.

Smoked Pork with Bamboo Shoots, a Naga specialty, reflects the region’s love for smoked and fermented ingredients. Similarly, Eromba, a Manipuri dish of mashed vegetables and fermented fish, showcases a minimalist yet flavorful approach to cooking.

Snacks like Momos, steamed dumplings filled with meat or vegetables, have gained popularity nationwide, often served with a fiery red chili chutney.

Conclusion

Indian specialty foods are a testament to the nation’s culinary diversity and ingenuity. Each dish tells a story of its origins, the people who created it, and the culture it represents. Exploring these culinary treasures is more than a gastronomic experience; it’s a journey through the heart and soul of India.

Traveling for Gaming

Traveling for Gaming

Games have always been an important part of society both for learning rules and strategy and experiencing competition in a healthy and fun way.

Vacations are good for the heart, body, mind and soul.  Everyone needs some time off, but not everyone is excited about that Caribbean beach and umbrella drink vacation or the Alaskan cruise to see the glaciers and the all-you-can-eat buffet.  Some people long for adventure, yet they are not prepared for rock climbing in Colorado or hiking the Highland Trail.

There are those who have fond memories of afternoons at the local arcade, weeknight backgammon games with their siblings and weekend competitive chess matches at the city park.  They still love spending a couple of hours in the evening playing darts at the local gin joint or take every rainy weekend as a cue to indulge in all-day video gaming. These game-loving types have started to constitute a new type of traveler: people, mostly in their 20s and 30s who travel for gaming purposes, in order to experience video game competitions or take a look at how exotic games are played. Who are these gamer traveler and what drives him to embark on game-filled journeys?

Pokémon Go

The phenomenon began over a weekend that is normally dedicated to the upcoming Independence Day in the good old US of A. Instead of parades and fireworks’,  the release of Pokémon GO  was scheduled for July 6, 2016. Pokémon GO was one of the first interactive reality games (meaning interaction with the REAL world) and it received rave reviews for giving gamers incentive to be more active in the real world. Shortly after its release, it had been downloaded by over 75 million people, and is now available in 33 countries. It implements a technology called Augmented Reality, meaning that it superimposes digital images on real images using your smartphone or tablet’s camera – but of course, moving forward, headgear like Google Glasses could also come forward to implement this gaming technology.

Many of the available countries are throughout Europe, making a Pokémon GO travel itinerary a must do.  Now you can travel through Tuscany in search of Jigglypuff or hang in Amsterdam collecting the elusive Gyarados. In fact, there are some Pokémon that are exclusive to specific locales: Tauros in North America, Mr. Mime in Europe, Farfetch’d in Asia and Kangashkan in Australasia. Considering that trading is not (yet) implemented in the game, completionists are already posting in internet forums, stating their intentions to take transatlantic trips and beyond to catch the Pokémon they’re missing.

What’s more, this phenomenon has already become apparent in some places: the Associated Press reported that because of South Korea’s limitation on GPS services, most Korean players are not able to catch Pokémon. There are, however, some places in the country that do have access to these services. Since the game’s launch in South Korea, people have been traveling to these areas, namely Sokcho, in order to play the game. They have actually gotten to calling it “Pallet Town,” after the name of the village in the inaugural games of the franchise, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

77% of players are over 18 and 54.2% make over $50,000 income, making travel for Pokémon a common travel decision. With new countries in the works, gamers can take a weekend chasing Vapoeons in a nearby city or travel across the world for a Caterpie.  Unfortunately, airlines and hotels are not accepting Pokécoins as a form of payment as of yet.

Tour Classic Game Histories and Championships

Pokémon just not your thing? You are wondering what ever happened to good old classics like Dominoes, Chess and Darts?  Believe it or not, they still the happening thing in many parts of the world.  It’s fascinating to discover and travel to where your favorite games across the globe, from poker to exotic Morabaraba were invented and are still a large part of the local culture today.

Whether it’s learning about the origins of Chess in India or Darts in England, the history of your favorite classics makes a great centerpiece to your travel plans. Additionally, even if you’re not the gamer-traveler type, local board and card games are a great opportunity to learn a bit more about the culture of the place you’re visiting, let off steam and bond with your fellow travelers and even locals.

Even more exciting is traveling the world to attend championships of classic games like backgammon or even pinball. The World Championship of Pinball brought Pittsburgh alive in April and the Backgammon Championship recently took place in Monte Carlo. The World Series of Dominoes takes place in the exciting city of Las Vegas in September. The World Chess Championship comes to New York City in November, followed by the World Darts Championship in London during the second half of December.

The Asian Experience of Arcades

Sadly, arcades have gone the way of the Dodo in the United States and Europe, but they are still very much alive and popular in Japan.  One can still enter the world of flashing lights, deafening techno music and machines blaring commands and retro music as players get lost in their own gaming world. This experience is completely unknown to many in the west.

If movies like Tron and Pinball Wizard are some of your favs, then a Japanese arcade adventure is the perfect vacation for you

Las Vegas

Las Vegas might be considered one of the adult gaming capitals of the world.  Casino destinations rank as top destinations for travelers with Las Vegas ranking the top 3 travel destinations in the US. With plenty of discount incentives to get travelers to start gaming, this does not need much explanation

If you have even the most remote interest in video games, either PC or console, you have probably heard of the phenomenon of eSports. What used to be limited to your living room and computer desk has become an arena sport, attracting millions in of tournament attendees and online viewers.  People travel from all over the world to watch brand sponsored League of Legends, Call of Duty and Warcraft teams battle it out on the big screens. Which brings us to the third gamer-traveler category: the professional (and his/her audience)! If you want to rub elbows with the newly famous, join over 150,000 fans this fall at the Counter Strike: Global Offensive Championship in London and San Francisco where winning prizes top $1.4 million. Or join over 300,000 fans in Paris for the ESports World Convention at Paris Games Week. If you can’t make it to a championship, there are a multitude of video game conferences to attend all over the world.

Travel companies are actually putting together tours for today’s gamer. Follow Lara Croft to Thailand or visit Havana, Call of Duty’s backdrop.  Tours include flights, accommodations and a “game plan.”

Regardless of your gaming passion, there is a great vacation awaiting you.  The assortment of event locations make it easy to bring your non-gamer mate and still have a brilliant “playcation.”

The Pros and Cons of Travelling by Car

These days, many don’t like using public transport and prefer to travel in their your own vehicle.  Here are some of the pros and cons of travelling by car that might help you decide whether or not this way of exploring is suitable for you.  Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car .

 Pros of Travelling by Car

 Flexibility

Flexibility is one of the biggest pros of travelling by car. You can stop as much as you like, drive at your own pace, and simply enjoy the freedom of a road trip.

No one is dictating where you can and can’t stop and you can choose how much you want to drive in one day before stopping overnight.

 Pets

Another benefit of travelling by car is that your beloved pets can join you if you choose this mode of transport. Pets are not usually welcomed on planes or trains, and when they are it is usually pretty stressful for them

Car rides can be fun for your pets, so nothing is stopping you from taking your pet to have an adventure with you! Just ensure you prepare your car appropriately in order to keep everyone safe.  You still need to find accomodations that accept pets.

 Packing

Unlike on a plane there’s no baggage limit, you can take almost the entire house with you. Well, not literally, but you can definitely pack everything you think is essential for such a trip.

No worrying while in the queue at the airport to check in if your bag in underweight or not, just simple throw everything you think you may need in the car and off you go.

 Better Views

A better view is another of the great advantages of travelling by car. When you travel by plane your view is limited and sometimes covered in cloud. If you choose to see the world from a ship, all you will see is water in every direction.

But if you pick a car as your transport, you will be able to see many beautiful villages, hills, and small towns along your drive. And you will always be able to stop and take some pictures.

Money Saving

Another great benefit of travelling by car is that it can save a bit of money. This works when you are travelling with a bunch of friends who can all chip in for gas. And, if your car is large enough, you can even skip renting a room and just simply sleep in your car.

Cons of Travelling by Car

Now let’s get to the biggest disadvantages of travelling by car.

 Long Distances

Well, let’s be honest. Driving takes a hell of a long time. You can sometimes drive for hours, and still not reach your destination. You can’t reach every part of the world with a car. You can’t drive through the ocean to travel

In general, if you choose a car as your way to travel, you will have to travel only where you can drive your car, and that means you might not be able to travel everywhere.

Shout out to the  LA Times and Citi for bringing 3 days of extravagance and entertainment to Hollywood during the long Labor Day Weekend!  Hooray!
Ok people... no need to fight intense traffic to go to some other town to find fun this weekend. And no need to fight crowds to get broiled at the beach.  The real action is right here in LA at Paramont Studios all weekend thanks to the LA Times and Citi Group!

The Los Angeles Times is bringing distinctive restaurants, dynamic demonstrations, libations and culinary experts together in one place at The Taste, a Labor Day weekend  culinary scene.

A who’s-who of Times critics’ best-reviewed restaurants – Girasol, Plan Check Kitchen + Bar, Fishing with Dynamite, Border Grill, Chichén Itzá, Acabar – is set to serve signature dishes during the three-day festival with more to come. Inspired conversations led by The Times Food staff will include chef and bartender insights on shopping the farmers market, a look at the history and influence of The French Laundry, and an exploration of foraged and found foods. Engaging cooking demos with James Beard Outstanding Chef Nancy Silverton (Pizzeria and Osteria Mozza), esteemed pastry chef Karen Hatfield (The Sycamore Kitchen, Hatfield’s), rising star Bruce Kalman (Union) and others will give attendees a glimpse into the city’s most revered kitchens.
